How to Replace Stove Door Rope

A practical sequence for replacing round stove door rope: measure first, choose the correct size and length, then fit the new seal when the stove is cold.

Choose the right replacement

Use a complete kit when you want rope and fitting essentials together, or build the rope by diameter, length and adhesive.

Step-by-step replacement

  1. 1. Measure the existing rope diameter

Measure the old stove rope without heavily compressing it. Choose the closest matching diameter. If the rope is flattened, missing or badly worn, check the stove manufacturer’s specification or ask The Stove Wizard before ordering.

  2. 2. Measure the length you need

Measure around the full stove door or glass channel. Allow enough rope to complete the seal and finish the joint. Do not stretch the new rope to make a short length fit.

  3. 3. Choose diameter, length and adhesive

Select the matching rope size and the length you measured. Choose with or without Rope Fix adhesive if you are using the configurable stove rope. A kit is useful when the listed contents match the job.

  4. 4. Let the stove go completely cold

Only start removal and fitting when the appliance is cold. Follow the stove and adhesive product instructions throughout.

  5. 5. Remove the old rope

Lift the worn rope out of the channel. Take out loose debris and any remaining fragments so the new rope can sit evenly.

  6. 6. Clean the channel

Clean out old adhesive, soot and dust. A clean, dry channel helps the new rope sit correctly and gives adhesive a better surface if you are using it.

  7. 7. Dry-fit the new rope

Offer the new rope into the channel before applying adhesive. Check the diameter sits without forcing and that the length will meet cleanly at the joint.

  8. 8. Use Rope Fix only where required

If the product or your fitting method requires adhesive, apply a thin, even bead of Rope Fix in the channel. Rope Fix is rated up to 800°C. Do not use more adhesive than needed.

  9. 9. Fit the rope without stretching

Press the rope firmly into the channel, working evenly around the door. Keep it relaxed in the groove. Stretching thins the seal and can leave gaps.

  10. 10. Finish the joint

Trim the rope so the ends meet neatly. If end tape is supplied with the kit, use it to tidy and help hold the join. Do not leave a raised overlap that stops the door closing.

  11. 11. Allow adhesive to cure

If adhesive was used, leave it to cure fully before lighting the stove. Follow the adhesive instructions. Do not put the stove into use while the joint is still wet or mobile.

Frequently asked questions

How do I measure stove rope?

Measure the existing rope diameter without heavily compressing it, then measure the length around the door or glass channel. Avoid relying only on the empty channel if old rope is still available.

What temperature is The Stove Wizard stove rope rated to?

The Stove Wizard stove rope is rated up to 650°C.

What temperature is Rope Fix adhesive rated to?

The Stove Wizard Rope Fix high-temperature adhesive is rated up to 800°C.

Do I always need adhesive?

Not always. Some channels hold rope by friction. Use Rope Fix when the product or fitting method requires it, and check the individual kit or option before ordering.

Should I stretch the new rope to fit?

No. Choose a length that completes the seal and press the rope in without stretching it.
