How to Fit Flat Stove Rope
Flat stove rope is a flat-profile door or glass seal. Use it only where the old seal or channel needs a flat section rather than round rope.
Choose flat or round rope
If the old seal is round, use round stove rope. If it is flat, use flat stove rope. Do not swap profiles unless the channel clearly requires it.
Flat stove rope versus round stove rope
Flat stove rope
A flat-section seal for door, glass or channel applications where a flat profile is required. Match width and thickness as well as length.
Round stove rope
A round-section door seal. Choose by diameter and length. The Stove Wizard round stove rope is rated up to 650°C.
How to decide
Look at the old seal and the shape of the channel. Appearance of the stove alone does not prove which profile you need.
How to measure and fit flat stove rope
-
1. Confirm you need a flat profile
Check the old seal. If it is round, use round stove rope instead. If it is flat, continue with flat stove rope.
-
2. Measure width
Measure the width of the existing flat seal, or the width of the channel it sits in, without stretching the material.
-
3. Measure thickness
Measure how thick the old seal is, or the depth available in the channel. Choose the closest listed flat-rope size.
-
4. Measure length
Measure around the door, glass edge or channel that needs sealing. Allow enough length to finish the joint without stretching.
-
5. Work on a cold stove
Remove and fit seals only when the appliance is cold. Follow the product instructions for any adhesive you use.
-
6. Remove the old seal
Lift out the worn flat rope or tape. Clear loose debris so the new seal can sit flat.
-
7. Clean the channel or glass edge
Remove old adhesive, soot and dust. The surface should be clean and dry before the new seal goes in.
-
8. Dry-fit the new flat rope
Offer the new seal into place and check width, thickness and length before using adhesive.
-
9. Use adhesive only where appropriate
Some flat seals are self-adhesive. Others need a separate high-temperature adhesive. Use glue only when the product or channel requires it. Where Rope Fix is used, it is rated up to 800°C.
-
10. Fit the seal evenly
Press the flat rope into the channel or onto the edge without twisting or stretching. Keep the face that should sit against the door or glass consistent all the way around.
-
11. Finish and cure
Trim the ends so they meet neatly. If adhesive was used, allow it to cure fully before lighting the stove.
Frequently asked questions
What is flat stove rope?
Flat stove rope is a flat-profile heat-resistant seal used on some stove doors, glass edges and channels where a round rope would not sit correctly.
How do I know if I need flat or round rope?
Check the old seal and the shape of the channel. If either is unclear, send the diameter/profile and any measurements you have and we will help you choose the closest suitable option from our range.
How do I measure flat stove rope?
Measure width, thickness and the total length required. Do not stretch the old seal while measuring.
Does flat stove rope always need glue?
No. Use adhesive only where the product or the channel requires it. Check the individual product details before ordering.
Can I use round rope instead of flat rope?
Only if the channel and old seal are round. A different profile can leave a poor door seal. Match the profile you actually have.
