The coals supplied with Living Flame fires are generally “broken” and random in shape. They are designed to give a traditional house-coal appearance.
Living Flame produces a wide range of standard and made-to-measure burners, so the following guidance is designed to help achieve an effective flame pattern across different burner sizes and shapes.
The fire bed is manufactured from compressed vermiculite board with a number of gas ports. Gas passes through these ports and mixes with air to produce the flame.
Correct coal positioning is important to maintain airflow and allow the flames to rise naturally through the fuel bed.
Layout instructions

Select enough similarly sized coals to form a row across the front of the burner.

Place the front row with the broken or rough side facing down towards the front edge of the burner.
Leave approximately 8-10mm between the coals.
The gaps allow gas and air to circulate around the coals and help the burner ignite correctly.
Do not obstruct the pilot.

Depending on the depth of the burner, add one or two further rows of coals, again maintaining approximately 8-10mm spacing.

Position the next layer over the gaps between the coals underneath rather than directly on top of them.

Continue additional layers in the same way, maintaining spaces so flames can rise naturally between the coals.

Correct log and coal placement helps maintain airflow and produce an effective flame pattern.
Build the base layer using the smaller ceramic logs, with coals positioned between them. Leave clear gaps so air can circulate through the fuel bed and the flames can rise naturally around the logs.
The base layer also provides support for the larger logs placed above.
The exact arrangement will vary depending on the size and shape of the burner. The examples shown are based on a rectangular burner approximately 40cm wide × 18cm deep.
After lighting, slight repositioning may be required to achieve the best flame pattern while maintaining suitable gaps between the fuel-effect pieces.
Example 1 Base layer
Use the smaller ceramic logs to build the base.
Position coals between the logs.
Maintain clear gaps for airflow and flames.
Do not obstruct the pilot or burner ports.
Example arrangement on a rectangular burner approximately 40cm × 18cm.
Example 2 Top layer
Position the larger ceramic logs securely across the base layer.
Maintain gaps between the logs so flames can rise naturally.
Do not overcrowd the fuel bed.
